
Project title: Novel applications of signal processing methods in quantum sensing (FENG.02.02-IP.05-0083/23)
The project "Novel applications of signal processing methods in quantum sensing" is carried out at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences as part of the FIRST TEAM programme of the Foundation for Polish Science co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for Smart Economy 2021-2027 (FENG), with Dr. Jan Kołodyński acting as its principal investigator.
Tasks and activities to be implemented under the project:
A key part of the project is the collaboration with the foreign partner, the group of Prof. Morgan Mitchell at ICFO (Spain) – a world leader in constructing atomic magnetometers that employ quantum effects, which will allow for direct adaptation of the prepared tools to experimental conditions and, in the long term, to commercial applications. The latter will be facilitated by the participation of the national partner – the company VIGO Photonics that manufactures instruments for integrated photonics, including miniaturized laser sources for atomic sensors.
Target groups:
The target groups of the project are, first of all, the scientific community awaiting breakthroughs within the research on quantum sensors and, secondly, industry and companies that are already commercializing this technology, e.g. the use of atomic magnetometers in medicine, but have not explored yet its full capabilities predicted by quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, it is the society that is the final beneficiary of the project, thanks to which sensing methods such as MEG or MCG can become more accurate and more accessible to the public.
Objectives and outcomes of the project:
The main goal of the project is to develop models and software dedicated to quantum sensors, so that the state-of-the-art theoretical research on the use of quantum effects in devices of this type can be applied in practice and, in particular, when sensing rapidly-changing tiny magnetic fields generated, for example, by the human brain (magnetoencephalography, MEG) or the human heart (magnetocardiography, MCG).
